The early morning sky began to eat away the typical fog that surrounded the Lews Estate manner, Niles was already awake and deeply entrenched by the book he was currently reading regarding the makings of universes. The theories and concepts there of were well beyond what your typical grade 10 student should be attempting without the aid of a professor, for some reason Niles enjoyed the challenge of such things. With the recent acquisitions of some major over-seas rival companies Niles Sr. was away on business again; and as always brought the lovely Elizabeth with him. It is not jealousy that drives contempt into Niles’ heart when he thinks of his older sister getting special treatment, but more of annoyance.
The day had finally arrived, the day that Niles no longer needed to see or even speak to his sister and family again if the mood struck him. Niles was always considered outcast of his family, even the media called “Niles Jr. the black sheep of the family” with no basis for this statement. The constant business trips and overnight office visits between Niles Sr. and Elizabeth were starting to get a rise out of the tabloids yet again; at least this time everyone in the house-staff had the notion to hide this bit of media propaganda from Mrs. Niles. “Wouldn’t want to send your mother into another one of her illnesses now would we?” The voice came from the middle-aged well groomed maid that had salt n pepper hair with the lines of age beginning to take hold of her soft tan complexioned face.
“I know how much you enjoy a good read Niles, but really, it is almost time for you to leave to your new home. Yet here I am packing your suitcases again, what was wrong with the clothing that I packed last night?” Her voice was soft now and slightly hushed not wanting to be heard by prying ears. “There was nothing wrong with it Min; you packed away the book I was reading,” Niles said calmly and with a bit of edge to it. “You are nervous of all people?” Min’s voice was almost ringing with shock as she looked at the boy she practically raised herself, “it will be fine Niles, I promise.”
On the way out Niles stopped in on the kitchen and sat down to talk with Bernard, the head chef and only person that Niles would talk to honestly other then Min. Bernard stood at a staggering 6ft. and seemed to have the belly of Buddha, but he was always smiling from behind a permanent 5 o’clock shadow. The years had treated him well and even though Bernard was well into his 50s he didn’t look a day past 42. “I certainly won’t miss your cooking; it often seemed a little bland.” Niles said smugly, to that Bernard stood from the crouch he was in during his morning inspection of the house pantry, “If you don’t like it you can cook for yourself boy.”
The voice was dry and scruffy as to be expected when working with flour thick in the air all around you; it was followed by a slight chuckle between the two. Niles flinched at Bernard’s harsh words, but after a moment regained his composure and remembered who he was talking to. “You know what happened the last time I took that advice,” Niles said as he looked up to the scorch mark that still scarred the ceiling. “Yes I do, and I also remember it was you that put the fire out.” Bernard said as he walked over to Niles, picking him up with a huge bear hug. “It just won’t be the same without you around,” Bernard released Niles then discretely pushed him out of the kitchen.

As the blue Lincon Town Car turned into Somnium Academy Niles sat comfortably in the back with his music playing to tune out the sound of the vehicle’s engine, the newspaper headline read “Niles Lews and Elizabeth Lews Affair?” This was of course accompanied by a photograph of Elizabeth asleep on father’s lap at the hotel they were staying in; always one for the spotlight Elizabeth seemed to do anything for it. I guess father never really taught Elizabeth about negative publicity, Niles thought as he closed the article and folded it neatly, Niles looked up just in time to see the main hall of the academy.
The car came to an abrupt stop as the driver hurriedly pulled Niles’ one suitcase from the trunk and waved good bye, getting back in the car and starting the long drive back to the Lews Estate. The grey worn tennis shoes that seemed to comfort Niles when he felt nervous, accompanied by his black painter’s pants with pockets filled with sheet music and notes. The blue button up polo-style long sleeved shirt that Niles was wearing hid his slender torso well, and the small grey bag that held his mp3 player and notebooks along with his reading books seemed to hide at his side. It was already past noon and Niles was just interested in one thing, finding the Library. After all, books were much more pleasing with their responses then people often give, or so Niles told himself.
The power struggles that man has endured are all recorded in books, and the trend was that inevitably struggle will repeat itself. Niles hated it when people would use power to manipulate others, it just seemed ethically wrong to him. Those in intelligence that mislead others with false information, and convinced them to make a choice without all the facts just seemed to be another form of manipulation. It all reminded Niles of his father and sister; it seemed that the whole world would bow down to them if they just talked enough. At times Niles would just be obedient to his sister because it would be the only way to get her to leave him alone.
Niles looked at the doors of Somnium Academy and shrank about 5 inches as he turned his music off and grabbed his suitcase, Here goes… Niles thought to himself as he walked up the steps and pushed opened the doors, it was a soft gesture that the timid Niles the world would know looked in at the massive corridor with doors jutting off in all directions and staircases that seemed to lead to a different world from the entrance. “H… H… Hello…?” Niles asked softly, his voice shaky and body seeming to mirror the sound of it, Niles fixated his translucent grey-blue eyes on the corridor for a moment in anticipation. After Niles’ heart was done skipping beats he stepped fully into the academy and closed the door, closing the door on the life that he once new…
