Falling asleep had been the nightmare for the last few weeks. Crystal dreaded sleeping more than she could have ever imagined, seeing her dorm room bed as a prison rather than a sanctuary. Nightmares seemed to happen even when she didn’t enter the Dream World, leaving her wondering exactly when she was inside her own head or when she was inside the other world. Tonight, the feeling was even more threatening than her own dreams so somehow the girl knew that she had entered the other place against her will. Instantly, she was terrified. Wide blue eyes hidden behind a heavy white cloak and a parasol, she searched the crowds of Demens for the one set of eyes that would bring back all of the memories she had tried to deny. Luckily, the throng of people was thick and she doubted a creature such as Fedafyr would dare to squeeze through them. As far as she could tell, he was a solitary demon without the desire for others to be around while he did his dirty work.
Can you hear my heart beat in this world?
Crystal visibly shook, her cloth-covered arms surrounding her as the village bustled around her. She liked the feeling of all of these different bodies and faces crushed against her body, bumping into her, tousling her amid the sea of people. The girl felt safe, as if nothing could touch her and she tried to relax and take the advice of her teacher who had told her that it might be good for her to analyze the voices around her. There were too many talking here though, and she pushed herself into a doorway before the crowd drew her away. Her heels were high, as they always were in the Dream World, and she felt them dig into the cement where she sought refuge. The town seemed to be moving at a faster pace than she remembered and suddenly, the desire to see it from high above the village.
Do you know that behind all these words-
The building whose doorframe she had pressed her thin body against seemed to have several stories to it, so she tried the doorknob, pleasantly surprised that it did, in fact, open up into what appeared to be an apartment building. Calmly, the silent staircase echoed with the clickity-clacking of her shoes and the rustling of her thick cloak. The spiral staircase was enormous with wrought iron railings but the darkness in the column scared her, making her trot up the rest of the floors in the machine gun clattering of heels that surrounded her. Paranoia surrounded the girl’s thoughts as she exited the staircase, bursting into the open air that the rooftop of the building provided. She was short of breath when she arrived at the top, her frame hidden beneath the thick cloak heaving as she reached the side railing. Her visible hand dropped the parasol she had been carrying and receded back into the cloak.
Lies a deep desire? Kamélé hé!
The city continued to move beneath her and she watched it contentedly. She wondered why this watchful eye she was giving the entire village felt so familiar, as if the was destined to be doing this very thing. Her fingers laced into the metal railing and she sank down against the rooftop, feeling a bit dizzy from the height and the strange sense of fear she still felt. The girl was confident, however, that the nightmare would not repeat itself. At least, that was what she had told herself.

If she stayed hidden in this place as she was, avoiding everyone in the entire village of Demens, she was safe. The girl looked at the ground and the puddle of cloth around her body. Never again would she remove the protective garment, she had lost herself the last time she had. A creature had nearly killed her in her sleep and had violated the Dream Form she worked so hard to keep from experiencing anything at all in this world. Crystal Dinaia had nothing good to say about the Dream World and had never met a person in it that didn’t terrify in her in one way or another. A voice from the street suddenly rose to where she had sunk against the rooftop.
Are my dreams to be all I can do?
A sweet, haunting female voice sang in a tone that sounded like a trance to Crystal. She turned, peering through the bars of the railing Her eyes caught sight of what appeared to be a young woman with a large brimmed hat pulled over her face. The girl played a guitar, the case open in front of her so that onlookers could drop payment into it. Crystal frowned slightly, drawn in by the sweet sound of the girl’s voice. The girl was distracted, entranced with the songstress as she tried to decipher the words she was singing. They seemed to be in a different language but they were comforting, the perfect background for someone to wait for sleep to end to and for morning to come. With a soft sigh, the girl pressed her back against the roof railing and waited for sunlight as her white umbrella rolled back and forth in front of her. As long as no one approached her, everything would be fine.
