Sarah walked into the library, and grinned. Empty. Just the way she liked it. She pulled her Bible out of her bag, and she walked through the silent library, and found a comfortable chair in the "lounge" type area. She grabbed a pen off the table, and flipped through the Book to the most recent dog ear she made in the pages.
Sarah mindlessly chewed on the cap as she started reading from where she left off. When she got to a verse she liked, she underlined it with the pen, then resumed reading. She wrote notes in the margins, and underlined and boxed, until her daily reading was completely marked up, and filled with thoughts. She capped the pen, and sighed happily, looking up at the ceiling. She enjoyed the silence. She bit her lip gently, and prayed, just staring up at the ceiling, and she jumped a little when she heard the door nearest her open and close.

“Phone. Keys. Wallet.” Crystal recited a mantra as she walked down the hallway, patting each of the pockets in her jeans in order to check for them. “Keys. Wallet.” The 13th year student stopped quickly and patted her pockets again, a little more rapidly, as if searching for something. “Keys. Wallet. Phone?” Her stomach dropped a little as she realized a vital component to her life was missing from the soft denim she had worn long enough to fit her hips perfectly. She would have guessed that if someone looked close enough at her front right pocket, the impression of a Blackberry 8820 would be there. Coincidentally, that smartphone was the exact thing that she was missing at the moment. The girl’s mind raced as she tried to track down the last place she had used it, thinking back through classes she had texted in when she shouldn’t have been doing so and through using it in the library to figure out how many years had passed between 1745 and 2008. The library! That was where she must have left her phone, granted that no one else had picked it up and she immediately spun around in the hallway to search out her missing right-hand-machine.
As she raced back to the library, the sound of her heels against the tile floor rattled like machine guns. Had she finally given in to the Italian super model taste for footwear her Dream Form desired so very much? The black leather boots on her feet now mocked her, not allowing her to run back down the twisting hallways, the stiletto heels preventing any fast or graceful movement. The legs of her pants had always been a bit long and were the reason she had put such unreasonable shoes on today and somewhere inside while getting dressed this morning, she had known that she should have worn flat sandals. Her hair was long and straight down her back, parted in the middle, as it always was. As she entered the library, she banged the door open a little too loudly and dropped to her knees at the table she had been sitting at. Crystal hadn’t noticed the girl sitting at the table quietly until she already had her phone in her hand, exclaiming a louder than usual “YESssss-” much to the chagrin of the librarian. The student shot an apologetic look at the dreamy looking lady and then blushed, gathering the bag she had literally thrown onto the girl’s table, scattering the books there.
“I’m sorry... I was looking for this and I got a little over excited. My name is Crystal.” The girl reached out the hand holding the cell phone for the girl to shake, then quickly corrected and shot out the other hand, sliding her phone into its usual pocket with the other, then pushing the shock of red hair away from her face with it.

Sarah groaned as she watched a redheaded female fly into room, and towards her table. She pulled her legs up into the chair, and watched the girl practically dive at a cell phone on the table in front of her, but in the process sending her bag flying across the table into the books and magazines, which sent them whizzing through the air. The librarian overlooked the scene with utter contempt on her face, which was odd for the normally bubbly old woman. Sarah sunk a bit farther into her chair, and felt the shock build behind her cheeks. The girl was in the middle of apologizing and introducing herself, and Sarah nodded slightly.
"Um, I'm Sarah. It's okay. It's not me you should apologize to. I'm used to noise. I think it's her over there," Sarah nodded towards the librarian. "who you should be apologizing to. It's understandable. I'd die if I didn't know where my cell phone was at all times." Sarah grinned a little, letting her air out in one quick gust.
Sarah took the offered hand, and gave it a firm shake, always being told she had a very manly hand shake, but she didn't squeeze hard at least. She pulled out her red Samsung Rant, and set it on the arm of the chair she was in. She ran her finger over the screen lovingly, and smiled. "This thing is my life." She offered happily.
"And you didn't interrupt, I was just finishing my readings for today. Do you want to sit or something? You make me uncomfortable standing there." Sarah spoke softly, looking up at her new, strange companion.

Crystal glanced down at the bangle wrist watch she was wearing and decided that she had enough time to take a seat. “Sure, I’ll stop for a minute.” She stated a bit loudly, glancing at the librarian who had seemingly fallen asleep at the desk. Feeling a bit of relief that she wasn’t getting another dirty look, she slid into the seat gracefully and sat up straight, her posture never failing even in the hard wooden chair she was sitting in. The student crossed her legs under the table and looked around the library she was sitting in. This part of the school had always amazed her because back in her old school, the school library hadn’t been nearly this extensive. Books on all subjects were stored in the tall shelves and she could have spent hours browsing them if she ever had the time for it. Between keeping up with her school work and visiting with her friends, she didn’t find a lot of alone time to do quiet activities here on campus. Crystal got her quietness out in the early mornings with a fitness routine she had to stick to in order to keep her frame as slim as it was. After those early hours, she was pretty much taken by the current of the day until she fell asleep at night. She enjoyed the busy lifestyle though and focused heavily on bringing up her GPA after it had fallen quite a bit her 10th year, especially after the car accident.
“I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable. It’s nice to meet you Sarah. What were you reading? Something for class?” Crystal spoke softly now, pushing her hair back behind the headband she wore, adjusting it until it caught all of the flyaways that seemed to possess it constantly. She looked a little confused as she thought about not having seen Sarah before here at Somnium, not recalling seeing her in any of her classes. “I haven’t seen you here at Somnium before, how long have you been attending?”

Sarah pressed her hand to her forehead slightly and smiled. Crystal was going to end up getting them kicked out of the library, but at least not right now, since the old librarian seemed to have fallen asleep. Sarah looked up, and Crystal had taken a seat and was looking around the library. "This is one of my favorite rooms in the whole building. It's usually very quiet, and not many people come in here anyway, so I can always sit for hours and read, or just think. Sometimes I take a leaf out of the librarian's book, and I nap."
Sarah looked around. She had already gotten acquainted with the library, even though she was only in her third day at the school. She managed to turn back in time as Crystal started speaking again.
"Oh no, I do all that reading in my room, since I've still got a room to myself. I'm reading my daily chapters from the Bible. I do it every day. And you didn't really make me uncomfortable, just gave me a little shock." Sarah watched as Crystal messed with her hair, and she subconsciously ran her fingers through her own hair. She knew her hair was perfectly straight, and the strays were down for now, but she had to check.
"I've been here for three days. I'm still getting situated. How long have you been here?" Sarah asked tentatively, now a little nervous.

"I've been here for four years, actually. This is my 13th year... I'm actually not really looking forward to graduating like I thought I would be!" Crystal gave Sarah a sympathetic smile. She understood the feelings that went along with starting in a new school quite well. It was lucky that Somnium Academy wasn't in a school system where students had been going to school together since elementary school, that way no one felt like a complete outcast when transferring in. It was always hard though, to pick up from one life and try to reform another one and it took a lot of time. Crystal, herself, hadn't been able to adapt as easily as other students who began attending Somnium and had fallen into a particularly wild bunch of older students who thought her shy ways were quite entertaining and were set upon corrupting her as quickly as possible. That phase of her life had passed though the effects of it had dampened her religious feelings significantly. Being raised in the southern United States, it was almost regulation that people went to church on Sunday and were brought up believing in the Lord. Crystal was no exception and was raised as a diligent Catholic, though she was currently nonpracticing.
Crystal gestured at the bible on the table and propped both of her elbows on the table, resting her chin on her fists. "Are you doing that program where you read a few chapters a day and finish the bible in a year? We did that in my Sunday school class a few years ago."

"Kinda like one of those programs yeah. I do it for myself. I have been fighting my faith, and I finally got settled in it, and am happy, but now I want to start changing, so I'm reading through the entire thing, a few chapters a day." Sarah blushed a little, running a soft finger over the well used cover of her bible. She had had the book forever, but never took the time to actually use it. Now it was full of little marks and comments and other notes from her reading.
"I'm a thirteenth year. I'm not looking forward to graduating at all. I'm new here, but I transferred in, and I've got no where to go once this year is done. I'm out on the streets to fend for myself, I guess." Sarah had gotten involved in some bad things when she was back in her home town, and her mother moved the entire family to England, to escape those things, as well as enroll her in a boarding school, where the students were monitored, sort of. Her mother figured she wouldn't get back into drugs at the boarding school.
Her mother took it one step farther however, and gave Sarah 2,000 dollars, in a bank account, and kicked her out. Sarah wasn't allowed back in her own home, and she had to make her money last until she was able to have a steady income. Which means she had to save as much as she could, and use that to rent a place after she graduated. She shook the thoughts out of her mind, not wanting to worry about that right at the moment.
"Sorry, did I interrupt you on your way to go somewhere? You look a little dressed up to only be looking for a cell phone..." Sarah looked up and smiled weakly.

Crystal fiddled with a thin silver bangle around one of her wrists as she listened to Sarah, maintaining healthy eye contact as her books about psychology had encouraged her to do when listening to someone. She didn't stare harshly, but nodded in places where she felt it was appropriate, giving a few smiles at some of her comments. Crystal, herself, knew what it was like to lose faith, especially after being raised in a family with a religious background. A part of her wanted to reach out to the girl, but she knew she would feel like a hypocrite by doing so. How was she able to help someone else with religion when she didn't even have a grasp of her own. She let the topic slide by, reserving it in true southern fashion for when they knew each other better. Sarah was the type of person Crystal could see herself growing to be comfortable with, but like with all of the girl's friends, it would be something she would have to work her way up to.
"Have you thought about college? It's almost like extending the time you're allowed to be a child.. I've heard a lot about some of the colleges in England; most of what I've heard is really good." Crystal had started researching her options for what happened after Somnium Academy, but was actually banking on a job here at the academy that could turn into something more than just a part time occupation. It was in tune with her future desires as well as her desire to stay at Somnium as long as possible.
"Dressed up?" Crystal gave the girl a blank look for a moment, her eyebrows narrowing slightly as she looked down at the clothing she was wearing. The black pants... the white shirt... The cute vest... It all meant something. Her mind was slow to react as she thought about it. Surely, she wouldn't have run back to the library if she had just been going home to do her homework, if that had been the case, she would have just walked slowly. The smell of her expensive by her standards Burberry perfumed tipped her off. Today at 4:30, she had an appointment with the school nurse to interview for the assistant nurse position. Glancing down at her bangle watch, her blue eyes opened widely, and she felt her cheeks flush suddenly. It was 4:21, a time that wouldn't have freaked most people out, but Crystal Dinaia had a habit of showing up thirty minutes prior to any appointment she made. Nine minutes was enough to run to the infirmary, but she would have to leave the library in quite a hurry. She hoped her heels would last for one more run.
Quickly, Crystal rose from her chair, almost tipping it over in the process. She almost hated that her first impression had been so hasty and now, unfortunately, so would her departure. "I... I just realized that I'm going to be late if I don't book it. It was nice meeting you Sarah! Here's my phone number, you can text me anytime!" Crystal scribbled down her phone number in elegant script numbers on a sticky note, then walked backwards toward the library door, hoping not to anger the librarian with her clicking footsteps. "Maybe we can do lunch next week?"
With that, Crystal bolted from the library and hoped she hadn't scared the poor girl off forevermore.
