Ryant is the type of boy that you wouldn’t easily pick out of a group as “the hot one” or even the most attractive man in the room. Quite contrary to that, he is a relatively plain man with few natural distinguishing characteristics. His hair, like his facial structure, like his chin are all within normal bounds. He isn’t overly muscular, rather, he conforms to a thin, wiry type of skeletal structure. For what he doesn’t have naturally, Ryant makes up for with stunning choices in well cut and eccentric clothing and a certain flair with accessories. Often one can find him wearing a scarf around his throat, or several layered shirts that wouldn’t seem to go together, but end up making a wonderful ensemble. Ryant has wonderful taste in clothing even though his standard outfits aren’t what most men would wear and always looks up to date, considering fashion one of his strong suits. He also keeps himself well groomed, a tendency his girlfriend of two years calls “metro sexual.” Having an affinity for waxed eyebrows, white teeth, well manicured hands and hair always has Ryant doing things that most other guys consider chick-like, giving him quite a reputation in the locker-room. It doesn’t matter to the boy though because in all actuality, he knows he looks his best when he goes out.

Ryant first and foremost is a showman. He’s the boy in the room most likely to break into song during a test or to turn in his book report with a “ta-da!” and a dance move. Being a musical theatre buff means knowing what the people in an audience want and being able to do give that to them. Ryant is a triple-threat: a singer, dancer, and actor with dreams of being a star someday, so he holds himself with a certain air about him and carefully guards his personal actions as to not ruin his chances of “making it.” He can also be very vain and fake when he sees fit, especially if someone has hurt his feelings and he doesn’t want to let them back into his life. He puts his swell acting skills to use quite often because in all actuality, Ryant is a gay man playing a straight one. His sexual preference brings about a lot of insecurity within the boy because he hasn’t yet told anyone about his feelings and his ultimate choice to pursue the lifestyle that best suits him. Fear keeps him in check and prevents him from telling his family and his long time girlfriend, even though he knows that every day he puts off telling them is another he can’t be himself around them. Ryant is often moody because he feels that the friends he has gained at Somnium Academy will no longer like him if he suddenly “changes” and becomes openly gay. Sometimes, he feels like he is walking around in someone else’s skin and this often makes him quick to snap at someone though he truly doesn’t like doing so. To date, Ryant hasn’t pursued a homosexual relationship and doesn’t intend to until he finds the courage to come out to his family and friends both back home and at Somnium. Coming out of the closet however bears the ability to break someone’s heart… And that is something Ryant can’t bring himself to do.

HISTORY:
Ryant began dancing as a small boy, much to his mother’s delight and his father’s chagrin. Of course, no man likes to know that his little boy prefers ballet and jazz to football and t-ball, but Ryant Sr. allowed him to take his classes without much argument. The Andersons were a family that lived in an upper middle class setting and focused more on what their children enjoyed doing in their spare time as compared to what they had dreams of them doing in the future. At the age of eight, Ryant took his first acting class as well and fell in love with the medium, learning how to express certain emotions in front of a crowd and becoming very good at doing so. In elementary school and middle school, the boy always took the lead in his miniature sized school plays, often singing and dancing just to hear the applause of the parents.
Ryant seemed to feed off of that approval and built up his skill list to include choir in junior high. Upon entering junior high, Ryant began to notice things about the people he preferred to be around, often hanging out with large groups of girls because he was usually the only boy involved in the same activities. At his group of friends’ urging, he tried out for cheerleading but fell short in the strength department, knowing that he couldn’t be responsible for holding up girls his own size for throws and other things like that. He instead tried out for the dance line at school and got a position, one of only three boys to try out in the entire history of the school. Many people questioned his sexuality as he tried these activities, but overall Ryant had a pleasant personality with no obviously gay tendencies other than the activities he enjoyed. He merely told people that this is what he liked to do, and he was just as normal as every other guy he knew. Only Ryant knew that he was telling a lie through his teeth, smiling to hide the fact that it hurt him inside to say the words. Even at his young age, Ryant knew that he didn’t find girls attractive in that way, knowing that the things other boys looked at and talked about when referring to girls didn’t give him the same reaction.
Upon entering high school, Ryant was an easy shoe in for the theatre department as well as the dance line there. Juggling a heavy schedule of dance classes, acting classes, theatre performances, and football game routines helped Ryant to deal with the realization that he was hiding a large secret from everyone he knew. Being in these activities forced Ryant into realms he hadn’t previously encountered, like the party scene as well as the ups and downs of the life of actors and actresses. When the high school would partner with other theatre production teams from surrounding towns, Ryant found himself alongside other gay men who were proud of their sexual preference and of themselves, a characteristic he found intoxicating and entirely enviable. After sharing a bottle of tequila with a couple other cast members at a cast party, Ryant and others found themselves playing an immature game of spin the bottle with strict rules: When the bottle lands, you must kiss the person it points to despite the gender. When another boy landed on Ryant, he laid a the proverbial lip-smack down on him without hesitation, an encounter that still sends shivers down the boy’s spine when he thinks about it. He left the party that night unable to think about anything else. At three o’clock the next morning, he was still awake and placed an emergency call to his best friend, a girl named Samantha, or Sam as she liked to be called.
Samantha and Ryant had been together in dance classes from the time they were small children and had talked about every subject conceivable. Perhaps it was the left over alcohol or maybe the bravery the other boy had shown, but Ry was fully prepared to tell Sam that he thought he was gay and needed her strength to be able to come out into the open. Waiting breathlessly for her to pick up the phone, relief rushed through him when he heard her sleepy voice on the other side of the line, words rushing out before he could stop them.
“Hello--?”
“Sam. I’ve been needing to tell you something for the longest time. You’re the only person I can.. I just trust you with my heart and soul and I really need you Sam. I’ve never said this before and .. Just promise me you won’t laugh when I say it. Promise me you’ll still love me when I do… And even if it doesn’t work, promise me you’ll still be my frien--
Samantha cut him off, her words fierce and equally as breathless.
“Oh my god, Ry,.. I’ve waited so long for you to say this. I’ll always loved you Ry and I will always love you. I’ll make it easier on you now and I’ll take the words right from your lips. I love you Ryant Anderson and I’d be honored to be your girlfriend. Now.. Don’t worry sweetheart, I’ll see you at school tomorrow. I’m just… So happy I could cry.”
Oh. Ryant couldn’t believe what had happened so quickly, his head swimming as he mumbled the words “of course, of course,” over and over again. Her voice sounded so hopeful, so brimming with tears that he couldn’t correct her. The thought of crushing her so thoroughly after all they had been through together, knowing that she had had problems with guys so early in her young life, it made his heart want to collapse. He couldn’t break her heart, even if it meant saving his own, not with what she meant to him.
Click.
The phone call ended and started a two year long relationship where Ryant was happy because he got to be with his best friend and because his family seemed happy now that the “gay” rumors were put to rest. Everyone seemed so relieved to know that even though he was a dancer, a singer, and an actor, he was still straight, a thought that mystified him. But the mockery of himself made Ryant’s patience wear thin, causing him to go through a phase of self-loathing and thoughts of suicide, thinking selfishly that if he just ended it, life would be easier for everyone.
Right as Ryant hit his lowest, and began thinking seriously about hurting himself, he was sent a letter of provisional acceptance to Somnium Academy as well as several scholarship offers. Though he tried to make it seem as if the decision was hard for him to make, Ryant knew that starting over his life, even if it was just a half-life for the time being was the easiest decision to make. He accepted the position at Somnium his junior year in high school and would be attending beginning as a 13th year student when he moved to England. Sam was mortified that he was leaving, heartbroken in fact, but when he reassured her that he would return, she made him promise that they would get married when he came back. Ryant did so, leaving his class ring on her finger as a promise. The promise was as shaky and ephemeral as high school itself and the boy knew that it would soon fade away, leaving her crushed despite all of his efforts to protect her. He simply didn’t know how he would do it…So he hasn’t yet.
dream form
Ryant in his dream form appears as he wants to be, a different man every night of his life. He is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of different people, different personas that are always male and are always sexually charged. He is never himself, showing his tendency to overact and over compensate in the real world. On his worst nights, he slips into a depraved persona known simply as Jaren, a selfish man only interested in his own desires. A constant wet dream, Ryant is fueled by adolescent and hormonal urges that he doesn’t understand or approve of and can only go along with. He can often be found looking for meaningful conversation in the Demens Inn or wandering the streets in a decidedly wanton way. His changing personality is proof that his inner struggle comes out in his dreams in the very worst ways, giving him everything he wants and can’t have as well as nothing he can handle.
