Kyle set a pallet of miniature rose bulbs down and examined his section of the garden. One other pallet, a small shrubbery, a hand trowel, watering can, bag of compost, and his lab coat sat on the ground next to him. A courier had delivered the roses the night before and Kyle was anxious to get them planted. For once, nature seemed to be cooperating; it was a beautiful, cloud free morning.
Kyle knelt, feeling the soil. He closed his eyes and let his hands walk across the dirt. Occasionally, he would push the dirt with his thumb, marking potential planting spots. He did his best to keep his mind blank, letting the soil and influence of three days (3 days, 4 hours, 23 minutes to be exact) without sleep determine its own pattern for the roses.
When he believed that the design was complete, Kyle stood and examined his handiwork. A puzzled look briefly crossed his face then he broke into laughter. If one were to look at the design Kyle was creating from overhead, one would see a rough Fermat's Spiral. He knew why his subconscious had picked a spiral. “Even when I’m not dreaming, you are never far from my mind…” Kyle said to the garden.
Still laughing, Kyle sorted through his roses. He separated them by type and began arranging them on the spiral. A small sign indicating what type of rose would eventually bloom was placed at the beginning of each grouping. He kept the shrub aside, saving it for the center of the spiral.
Satisfied with his color choice, Kyle began to plant the roses. He started by digging a 1 foot diameter hole where the rose would go. Next, a handful of compost was placed into the hole. Finally, the rose bulb was put on top of the compost and the hole was filled in. Kyle repeated this process working along the positive arc of the spiral first, quickly losing himself in a spiral of thoughts.
