Hello and welcome to the 6th iteration of Somnium’s Technology Blog. This blog is open to all students and staff and its highly recommended that they check it often. I welcome all users to leave comments, complaints, or songs of praise. Contained within this blog, you will find tidbits such as:
*Technology related updates and how they affect you at Somnium*
*News about the networks and PCs on campus*
*Other random things that may benefit your lives*
As always, this is your all knowing, yet benevolent Network Administrator,
Logan Fairfax (L.fairfax@somnium.edu)

Email Boxes
I’ve harped on this more times that I can remember but we’re still having problems with storage on our email server. Somnium has a lot of students and a fair amount of staff too. Each person is allotted 1gig of space for their messages (Inbox, Sent, Deleted, Spam, and Archived.) The average text based email is only 5-15 kb. There is no reason for your email boxes to be nearing the full capacity. Here are some things you can do to cut down on your email size.
- Get a Gmail account. Its free and they give you 7-8 gigs worth of space
- Empty your Deleted Items and Spam folders regularly.
- Empty your Inbox and Sent Items folders annually.
If you use your school email address to sign up for newsletters or updates, remember that they can pile up if you don’t delete or archive them. See step 1 and maybe use that email account for newsletters. Also, if you use your school email address to sign up for things online, chances are you’re going to get Spam mail…Even if you don’t use your school email, it is your responsibility to check it regularly or have the mail forwarded to another account.
If your email box is nearing capacity, you will receive a message from me sometime today. In the event your box is full, you will be receiving an unpleasant phone call from me instead. I’m going to give everyone a week to clean up their email. If, after that time, I find any users whose boxes are near capacity, they will find that all their messages have been purged.

Dozer Threat Contained
The Dozer Worm released onto our system last week has been contained and eliminated. Only a small number of PC’s were affected, but I would remind those using their own PCs to keep their antivirus software up to date. Also, when you receive a link from someone on MySpace, please make sure you know the person and/or check that they sent it to you BEFORE you click the link. *glares at the idiot who released the virus* And yes, I know who you are and I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt and not banning you for a month. See? I can be a nice person sometimes.
