F.A.Q.
What's the difference between a Dream Being and a Dream Form?
Dream Beings are residents of the Dream World. Dream Forms are the manifestations of the Real World characters (Somnium Staff and Students) which can go into the Dream World. At the bottom of both the Staff and Student templates is a section to fill out about the Dream Form of that character. Dream Forms can interact with Dream Beings in the Dream World but they aren't the same thing.
When and where in the world is Somnium Academy?
Somnium Academy is set in the present day somewhere in England but students don't have to be English to attend. The Dream World, however, can be set in any time or place.
Does everyone in the school know about the Dream World?
Yes. All students are told about it on the first day of attendance. They know that other students also enter the Dream World as well. However they do not know the identity of a person they meet in the Dream World unless it is evident in the person's Dream Form or the person has told them. Hopefully it will lead to quite a few guessing games occurring and it could be entirely possible that two people can be enemies in the Real World and friends in the Dream World and not realise it.
Do people know about the Dream World before attending Somnium Academy?
No. Somnium Academy is know by the general population as an elite school for gifted, if ever so slightly troubled, teenagers.
How is it that the Dream World is so connected to the students of the school?
Ahh, this is a great mystery in itself and has something to do with the elusive Headteacher, the founder of Somnium Academy. There is definitely a bit of magic in the air around the school building.
Is Somnium Academy a boarding school?
Yes. Otherwise the students would have nowhere to sleep and enter the Dream World.
So when the students go home, say for summer break, they won't be able to enter the Dream World? Is it only at the school that they might be able to do so?
Students can't enter the Dream World when not sleeping at Somnium Academy. However there's nothing stopping them dreaming about the Dream World when away from the Academy, although it won't be the real Dream World. If that makes sense.
Also, as a side note, entering the Dream World doesn't happen every night. Therefore the students and staff alike get a chance to rest properly.
Can a dream form change? For example, if a character starts off with a dreary Dream Form that reflects their low self esteem or a trauma and later in the RP they overcome this internal issue (or the reverse) could their form change to reflect this?
Yes it can. If it does change though please edit your profile saying so, and also write why it has changed.
Do things that happen in the Dream World affect the Waking World? For example, would drinking all night at the Demen's Inn mean a hang over when the character wakes up?
No. People can only stay in the Dream World for however long they can stay asleep. If they wake up in the Real World then that's it. That way it's possibly to accidentally leave the Dream World if you're woken up by something, or just fade from the Dream World if you've woken up naturally.
As for the Dream World having an affect on the Real World: most of the time it doesn't, except in memories and emotions.
What about injuries in the Dream World?
There is a phantom feeling of the injury when returning to the Real World but no visible sign. No one can die per se in the Dream World, otherwise it wouldn't be safe to have it on the School Curriculum. People can, however, be injured emotionally.
Can you dream in a Dream World? As in, do Dream Beings dream?
No one can dream in the Dream World. Dream Beings sleep but the concept of dreams is unknown to them apart from what people from the Real World tell them. Maybe some are even jealous of not being able to dream. Who knows...
How do students get spots at Somnium?
Some students at Somnium were recruited to go to the school while others applied for a position.
Do you have to have an alias in the Dream World if you're not a Dream Being?
No. You can have an alias if you want, but you don't have to. Generally those who want to keep their Dream Forms unknown to the Somnium population choose an alias.
