The mists were being kind to Lexi today. She surrendered herself to them and had been rewarded with a peaceful morning and a lake deep in a forest. A small farming village was the only settlement around. The serenity was shattered by a boy’s scream. He had entered the forest, chasing after an escaped farm animal. Another scream echoed through the forest, this time it was cut short by a crunching noise.
“Shhh, this is the easy part.” Lexi leaned over the gasping boy and licked a drop of blood from his lips. Its warm, sweet, metallic taste filled her mouth. She had chased him to the edge of the lake before finally striking him in the head with a large stone. Lexi knelt over the boy and spread her wings, forming a cocoon of sorts around him. In one fluid motion, Lexi unsheathed a large hunting knife strapped to the inside of her left wing and sliced across his neck, severing the boy’s carotid artery. Blood covered Lexi’s smiling face.
Half an hour later, Lexi had finished her meal. She had indulged a tad; couldn’t help it really. The boy’s blood covered the shore and surrounding trees. Lexi gathered his leftovers and threw them into the lake. The bones sank; any remaining flesh would be picked at by the fish.
Lexi stood at the edge of the water and looked down at her reflection. “Beautiful…” She knelt and ran a hand across her body. The boy’s blood had coagulated and for a moment, Lexi enjoyed making designs on her bare flesh. When the novelty wore off, Lexi dived into the lake. That would at least take care of the blood on her body.
Lexi surfaced and crouched at the edge of the lake again. She dipped her right wing into the water and carefully wrung the blood out of each feather. She was about to start on the left wing when something shifted. Lexi was not alone. Worse, she wasn't positive how long her observer had been there. She dipped her left wing into the water and slowly unsheathed the knife again. She pretended to clean the wing, senses on full alert. “It is not nice to spy on a lady while she is bathing…”
