Eoin has a boyish face, capable of a devastatingly attractive grin. Classically beautiful? Leave that to the models and the masses. He stands out enough to be thought of as different, even a bit exotic. His most captivating feature is his eyes; Ice blue orbs, cold in their intensity.
In body, Eoin is tall, thin, and lanky. This is obviously how he garnered the nickname ‘Scarecrow.’ In truth, all clad in black, his body type might be reminiscent of Jack Skellington. However, Eoin has more meat on his bones; he’s not bulky, but it’s obvious that he is muscled and strong underneath his clothes.
Eoin also stands out in dress. Normally clad in a black band t-shirt or hoodie, freaker pants or jeans, and boots, he seems imposing. Add to the fact that his arms are adorned with spiked bracelets, his leather belt decorated with genuine bullet casings, and imposing gives way to slightly frightening or fascinating.personality
There are reasons to avoid Eoin. Firstly, he doesn’t deal well with people who he deems ‘fake.’ Which tends to include people who believe only first impressions, people with their noses up in the air, and people who have pretend to have knowledge about subjects they know little to nothing about. Bullies also are a common target of his ire, simply because he has been bullied in the past. Finally, he is a fighter, in all senses of the word. He’ll attack a goal until he’s conquered it, and he’ll never back down from fisticuffs or a verbal argument. He likes to win, who doesn’t? But he’s not broken up overmuch when things don’t fall out his way. He’ll ready himself for the next go ‘round.
Eoin also has what some would call an ‘unhealthy attitude towards death.’ He doesn’t really care whether he lives or dies, and that scares some people. It’s different from most teenagers, who don’t believe in their own mortality. Eoin embraces the fact that he could die at any moment, and throws himself into dangerous situations to amplify the fact. Although he draws the line at hard drugs, he’s lived a lot in his eighteen years, fought with fists and weapons, and he’s stood up to anyone who tries to diminish him, instead of backing down and taking it. Tough both physically and mentally, his attitude towards death has shaped him.
What makes Eoin most unbearable is his honesty. Most people think Eoin just says things to be an asshole. And while it may be true he’s an asshole, he’s always giving his honest opinion. If he thinks an idea sucks, he’ll say so. If he doesn’t like the music playing in a club, guess what. He’ll tell you. You get the picture. Still, Eoin’s honesty can be a good thing. If anyone actually values his opinion, which is rare, he always gives an honest assessment. So while he may appear to be an asshole, he’s a honest one.
Even though Eoin has taken a few blows to the skull, he’s no slouch in the brains department. He’s certainly not a genius. But he can easily pass his classes, and he’s good at spotting subtle details and retaining information.
Eoin also has a chivalrous streak. He was raised that way. He can’t really help it. In the presence of ladies, he’s a bit more polite, although his honesty always shines through. He pulls out chairs, he opens doors, he does it all. He’ll be chivalrous even to women he dislikes intensely. He will be decidedly less conversational, though.family & history
FATHER: Cillian Carey, 52. An ex-IRA member, he grudgingly accepts that the Irish will have to live with the English. Still, he raised his boy to be an honest and good man, very rarely treating either of his sons with his hand or the belt.
MOTHER: Amara Carey, 48. Still beautiful despite the years, her black hair is streaked lightly with gray, and her eyes are perhaps a shade darker than Eoin’s. Taller than her husband, but slight of build, it’s obvious that Eoin takes more after her. She looks warmly after her boys, but her words can be as harsh as Cillian’s belt. Her boys learned discipline early from her, and she keeps on after them about it.
OTHER FAMILY: Connor Carey, 14. Brother. A boy who looks to be taking after his father, bulky and stout, he looks up to Eoin as a role model. He is surprisingly gentle and soft for a boy who’s dealt with the McLeod parents.
Birgitte McLeod, Sister. Deceased; killed in a car bombing by the IRA, before the peace with Britain became official (2005).
HISTORY: Honesty is a virtue. Eoin learned that early, on his father’s knee. “Eoin,” he would say, “you never tell a lie. It’s a bad mark on a man’s character if he’s a liar.” But even after saying such a somber truth, he would smile and laugh, and sing the lullabies of his homeland to his two sons, Irish croons that were soon joined by his wife’s alto.
Eoin may have giggled at the saying, but he took it to heart. It earned him no end of grief in school. After the first few years of school, where honesty is expected, children began to learn the guile of lying. Eoin never took to it, and he would be the ‘snitch’ and the ‘rat.’ This earned him a few beatings, and he always wondered what he’d done wrong.
It was after one particularly nasty encounter, when Eoin was nine, that Cillian began teaching Eoin, and his younger brother Connor, the rudiments of self defense. Amara frowned upon the whole idea, but she consented grudgingly. “As long as the boys keep up their studies, and don’t drop out of school to be thugs,” she was often heard to say.
Eoin took like fighting like a fish to water. His skill at spotting detail, once reserved for literature and arithmetic, found a battle application in probing defenses. A small twitch above the eye, perhaps, was a tell for an incoming punch. A muscle spasm would indicate fatigue.
Eoin’s skills were put to good use, for the most part. He became an advocate for his younger brother and sister, and even to some of the smaller children. While the bullying never really stopped, Eoin at least kept it to harsh words instead of harsh blows.
Eoin’s life was first rocked when his family became one member smaller. His mother and Birgitte were walking home from errands, on a cold December day. Just like any other day, until it wasn’t. At this point, while there may have been the semblance of peace between Ireland and England, some radicals didn’t like the overtures of peace. As such, violence, while dwindling, still occurred. A car bomb went off, killing Birgitte and severly injuring Amara. Birgitte was only seven years old. The date was December 22. To this day, Eoin looks with dread towards his birthday and Christmas, wishing that the last time he’d said good-bye to Birgitte hadn’t been the last.
Understandably, the loss hit the family hard. Cillian took it with special difficulty, since it was discovered that an IRA bomb had killed his daughter. Having supported that faction at one point, he was more devastated than the rest of his family. Instead of crashing, however, he emerged from his depression with a hard resolve to keep his sons away from the life he had lead. Amara, obviously opposed to any violence, supported this decision.
But Eoin, approaching his teenage years, rebelled. He wanted revenge; he was a good fighter, he tried to logically argue with his parents that it was ‘justice.’ Of course, his arguments fell on deaf ears. And when he couldn’t vent his aggression on his sister’s killers, he sought other outlets.
People describe the teenage years as some of the best of a human lifespan. But it was here that Eoin began to spiral downwards. His moods became dark, reflected in his outer clothing and even the music that he listened to. Here was developed his attitude towards death; he threw himself into fights, though he never started them.
Still, Eoin’s parents became weary of paying for lawyers and bail charges. They sat down with Eoin, and they talked. Turns out, strangely, that was all it took.
Over the years, Eoin had been searching for some meaning as to why Birgitte was murdered. He had been selfish, neglecting his family in his search. Not finding anything, he had become more depressed. Eventually, the reality of his actions had caught up to him, and when his parents sat down to talk to him, they discovered that he was sorry for what he’d put them through.
Even so, Cillian and Amara worried. Eoin had been acting out, but what if that wasn’t all? It was then they decided to enroll him in Somnium Academy. One last summer with his family, spent trying to recapture what he’d missed, and Eoin was off.dream form
Eoin appears in the dream-world as the Erlkoenig, a Germanic folktale popularized by Goethe. There are no records of how the Erlkoenig looks, so Eoin has adopted his own idea. The only constant in the descriptions is that the Erlkoenig is elven. So Eoin is a typical elf; Flawless alabaster skin, pointed ears, and long flowing silver hair and eyes. But the Erlkoenig is depicted as a child-thief, and sometimes as a hunter. So the dark aspects of this persona appear in black garb, chased with silver throughout. Cloak, tunic, boots, and trousers are all black and silver. In the dream world, a bow and quiver sit on his back, testament to both the hunter and elven aspects of this character.
